Reading About It

There are many good books to support suicide survivors. This has not always been the case. Until about two decades ago, there was not much written to support survivors.

"I recall that I went almost immediately to the library in search of books which might give me some understanding and comfort. I pored over them, cover-to-cover within the first few days, but that is what I usually do when confronted with something challenging. I look to see what has been written or said about that topic. The books were helpful. Just how helpful they were in the very beginning, I really can’t say, as I was so numb. Perhaps I was better able to digest them later in my journey.  I do recall using one text in those early days to show a relative that suicide was no longer considered a 'sin.'

Whenever I read now, I am moved by the experience and courage of other survivors. Some of the best books have left me with the feeling that I am sitting down with a good friend.

As with anything, the attraction to reading is personal. Last month I met a 12-year survivor who said she had all the books but had never felt like reading any of them."
